India evacuated 75 nationals, including 44 pilgrims from Jammu and Kashmir, from Syria on December 11. Ravi Bhushan, a businessman from Ghaziabad, described the dire situation with bombings, looting, and unrest. He praised the Indian government and Syrian embassy for their support. The evacuation, coordinated by Indian embassies in Damascus and Beirut, ensured the safe passage of citizens to Lebanon before their return to India. The operation followed a surge in Syria’s civil war, where rebels, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, overthrew Bashar Al Assad’s regime and seized control of major cities, including Damascus, on December 8.
